We are looking for an DevOps Automation Engineer to join our team in London!
Salary Range: from £60,000 to £70,000, based on experience and qualifications.
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled DevOps Automation Engineer to join our Innovation team. This team is focused on providing robust, scalable, and standardized automation solutions for application and site deployment across the company. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining the core pipelines and infrastructure that empower application development teams to deploy their code efficiently and reliably. You will work closely with application developers to understand their needs and with internal automation developers to implement best-in-class CI/CD practices.
Key Responsibilities
- DevOps Automation Strategy: Analyse existing deployment processes across business units to identify automation opportunities and define a roadmap for standardized CI/CD practices.
- CI/CD Pipeline Design & Implementation: Design, build, and optimize automated build, test, and deployment pipelines using GitLab CI/CD. Focus on creating reusable, efficient, and maintainable pipeline configurations.
- Artifact Management Standardisation: Implement and enforce standardized practices for managing application artifacts (Helm charts, Docker images) using JFrog Artifactory registries within the automated pipelines.
- Cloud Infrastructure Automation: Design, provision, and manage the cloud infrastructure required to support the CI/CD pipelines and deployment targets, primarily on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), ensuring scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness using infrastructure-as-code.
- Automation Security: Integrate security best practices into the automation pipelines and infrastructure, including the secure handling of credentials and secrets using tools like HashiCorp Vault.
- Collaboration and Enablement: Partner closely with application development teams to integrate their applications with the standardized CI/CD pipelines and provide support and guidance on automation best practices. Collaborate with internal automation developers on developing and improving core automation scripts and tools.
- Pipeline Analysis and Optimisation: Proactively analyze pipeline performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations to improve speed, reliability, and efficiency of the automated delivery process.
- Tooling and Framework Development: Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal automation tools, scripts, and frameworks used by the team and supported development teams.
- Documentation: Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for CI/CD pipelines, automation tools, infrastructure configurations, and operational procedures for development teams.
Required Qualifications
- Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in DevOps, CI/CD engineering, or a related automation-focused role.
- Deep expertise in designing, implementing, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines, with proven experience using GitLab CI/CD.
- Proven experience with JFrog Artifactory (or similar) for managing Helm charts and Docker image registries within automated workflows.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure automation, focusing on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or similar providers (AWS, Azure), specifically as it relates to supporting CI/CD and application deployments.
- Solid experience with HashiCorp Vault (or similar) for secrets management in automation contexts.
- Technical Skills:
- Expert knowledge of containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and Helm for packaging and deploying applications via automated pipelines.
- Expertise in infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) for provisioning and managing cloud resources for automation infrastructure and deployment targets.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., Python, Bash, Go) for developing and maintaining automation tools and pipeline scripts.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Stackdriver) as they apply to monitoring pipeline performance and deployed application health signals for automation feedback.
- Solid understanding of security practices in CI/CD, including secure coding practices, vulnerability scanning integration, and access control within pipelines.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to effectively work with both application development teams and internal automation developers.
- Proactive mindset with a focus on identifying automation opportunities and solving technical challenges related to software delivery.
- Ability to analyse complex technical requirements and design practical, scalable automation solutions.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer certification.
- Experience in providing centralized automation services or standardizing CI/CD practices for multiple development teams or business units.
- Experience contributing to internal developer platforms or self-service automation tools.
